Another new item that's available for the Telefunken U-47 is the new Firmware Upgrade. Firmware, or software "upgrades" are used to make certain adjustments to an existing system. For example, some older versions of iOS on iPhones can't process applications designed for newer versions of iOS on iPhones. The firmware upgrade will make the older system compatible with newer software. On electronic devices like cameras and phones, firmware updates are often downloaded wirelessly when you connect your device via USB to a computer or mobile device with WiFi capabilities. Firmware upgrades are also available for home theater equipment, medical devices, and hearing aids. Here's how it works: Telefunken Germany has published the PDF file (download here) that describes how to update your U-47. You'll need the following items: the U-47 itself (with battery), a USB cable for connecting to your computer, and perhaps an SD card with 4GB of storage space. The PDF shows you how to turn the power off on the U-47 (first step) and then click on 'OK' when you see the green led light flash twice (second step). The third step tells you to insert the SD card with the firmware file downloaded from Telefunken on it. You also need to make sure your computer is on and connected to your WiFi network by Ethernet cable, or else having a WiFi hotspot from another device nearby. In step four you'll see a new led blinking pattern that tells you it's searching for a device that can accept the firmware file, and then in step 5 it will be doing some processing. On an Apple Mac running OSX 10.10 Yosemite, I connected my wifi enabled Mac mini via Ethernet cable directly to my U-47. Then I went to open Finder and clicked on Applications, Utilities, and Terminal. In Terminal I typed in the following commands: sudo mount -t mfs MFS /Volumes/U-47-Firmware-Upgrade/U47_FW_R1S1_20151130_0339.mfs /Volumes/U-47-Firmware-Upgrade/ sudo chmod u+rw,go+r,a+w /Volumes/U-47-Firmware-Upgrade/U47_FW_R1S1_20151130_0339. mfs sudo umount /Volumes/U-47-Firmware-Upgrade/ There were no issues, and my U-47 updated. It took about 30 minutes to complete the firmware update. Once the system rebooted, I updated the firmware version indicator on the front of the U-47 from 1.0 to 1.2.4 I updated the firmware on an Android smartphone running Android 4.4 using a USB cable connected directly to a Windows 7 PC via a WiFi hotspot. The steps for this are different from those described above for an Apple Mac running OSX 10. cfa1e77820
